it's monday, january 121st. this is bay area news at 7:00. history was made today as president obama renewed his promise to the nation in a public swearing in ceremony and tonight, the celebration is underway. torrie is live in washington dc with the latest on the inaugural festivities and what is happening now. >> reporter: tonight we're seeing even more of those memorable moments including president obama and the first lady dancing at those balls.

the music is playing and champagne flowing. thousands are attending inaugural balls. >> today we experienced the deem hock see. >> so help you god. >> so help me god. >> congratulations, mr. president. >> reporter: a very public oath of office. supporters are braving the cold packed the national mall, a million strong. people eager to catch a glimpse of history. >> thank you so much. >> reporter: with democrats and republicans struggling to find common ground on key issues, obama pushed for unity. >> my fellow americans, we're made for this moment and we'll seize it, as long as we seize it together. >> reporter: he brought attention to climate change and gay rights and equal pay for women and we heard a familiar

theme from the campaign trail. >> for we, the people, understand that our country cannot succeed when a shrinking few do very well and a growing many barely make it. >> reporter: no inauguration would be complete without the president and first lady walking the parade route. then more personal moments, enjoying the festivities and music from the comfort of their viewing stand. >> so lots of moments but perhaps the biggest question of all, what was michelle obama going to be wearing to the balls? turns out she wore a dress, a red long gown and that's the same designer from four years ago, jason wu. we're live in washington, back to you. once again, the inaugural celebration is in full swing. this is a live picture of the commander in chief's ball. that is taking place inside the washington convention center.

there are only two official inaugural balls and this is one of them and sounds like they are playing prince right now as we listen in. military members in dress uniforms celebrating from all five branches of service. the second is the public ball, which is being held downstairs from this ball. ken and torrie are in the nation's capital where they found bay area residents at today's inaugural ceremony. >> when i have kids i'll tell them that i did experience something of this magnitude. >> according to one estimate, about a million people filled the national mall to see the president sworn in and hear his address. also in the crowd california state senate majority leader of san leandro. we asked her what her highlight was. >> for women to have equal

wakes and a great job and the president made references to preserving the environment. >> reporter: in his speech, the president mentioned several other issues including immigration reform and equal rights for gays. the bay view of pro-house in san francisco hosted a watch party today. dozens of people cheered and clapped as they watched a live broadcast. many became emotional as they watched president obama speak. one woman said she's glad the president will have the chance to complete the work he started in the first term. you can go to our website for more, including links to unedited video. look for the tab at the top. the president took the oath of office the same day the nation celebrates the rights of dr. martin luther king junior. >> hundreds marched in san francisco to remember dr. king's legacy. the freedom ride commemorates the ride. many were old enough to remember him and one marched at his side. >> he was a wonderful person, wonderful person. i always said nonviolence. >> for all americans to get out and enjoy this day and just to celebrate. >> the celebration ended with a prayer, discussion and films. the san francisco 49ers are of course headed to the super bowl and today the team's head coach had plenty to say as robert reports, jim already knows much of the hype will be about himself and the team's other coach, the other head coach, his big brother. >> hello? >> good to be back. >> reporter: the 49er coach was in a good mood as he arrived for the weekly news conference.

he said the team had a happy flight home. he demonstrated just how happy as he praised various players including his quarterback. >> just the way kaepernick was, you know, the gracefulness of his stride, the ground that he covers, it reminds me of me when i run. and then i wake up. >> reporter: he said much of the super bowl hype will focus on his brother, john, the coach of the ravins. he called it a blessing and a curse. >> you know, the curse part would be that, you know, the talk of two brothers playing in the super bowl and what that takes away from, you know, the players in the game. >> despite jim's attitude, some fans at the camped to said they consider the sibling contest historic. >> we hope all year this would

happen to him. we -- i was elated when this happened because the brothers, when will this happen again? never. >> reporter: he emphasized the two brothers love each other and don't plan to talk much, just exchange text-messages until after the game. >> the 49ers quest for six is great news for retailers that sell greer with the team's logo on it. the official store opened an hour early this morning. fans moved in, grabbed up shirts and hats, some declaring the team nfc champs after yesterday's four point victory. others bought replica jerseys with the number seven, kaepernick's number. most would love to wear that gear to new orleans in two weeks. >> i would do anything to make it to the super bowl. we had all the money in the world, that's where we would go. it would be amazing. >> official 49er super bowl

pack cakes with airfare, how tell and end zone ticket start at $6200 a person. san francisco police are reporting the final arrest tally after the 49ers championship, a total of 12 people were arrested, nine for public intoxication, one for assault with a deadly weapon, one for driving under the influence and one individual was taken into custody on an out standing arrest warrant. police are preparing for what may happen after a victory of the super bowl. the kings are closer to moving to seattle and from all indications it's a done deal. the brothers have agreed to sell the kings to a seattle based investment group. it will buy 65% for $340 million. the group would move the team to seattle and restore the team's former name, the super sonics. while the deal is not finalized, they say, it's not looking good for sack pen toe. >> if sacramento losses the kings, they won't see another

nba team in at least my lifetime or many other people's. >> the deal to move the kings to seattle still needs approval from the nba board of governor s. there was a dray mat tick -- dramatic rescue today near the cliff house. a surfer was in trouble. live at the beach to explain why it was such a difficult operation, janna. >> reporter: these signs are posted warning people about the dangerous water conditions. today a surfer got into trouble and he's safe thanks to four rescuers who decided they would swim out into the chopty water. the call came at 11:45 this morning. they flew over the scene as the coastguard, san francisco police and fire crews tried to reach a surfer stranded just off ocean beach below the cliff house. fire officials say the man had been out surfing with a friend and started cramping up.

>> he climbed up onto the rock and they didn't think he would swim back to shore. >> reporter: his buddy called for help but when the police boat arrived, the water was too rough and the rocks too dangerous to get close enough. a rescue helicopter was 40 minutes away so four fire department swimmers said they would go out and attempt it. >> we sent out two teams to -- one to communicate off the other rock and the other two on the boards to go out and rescue him. >> reporter: they told the surfer who was perched on the rock to jump. he plunged back into the water. rescuers swam over giving him the larger rescue surf board and helping him to the boat. >> he was just tired. >> reporter: had he been out there long? >> maybe half an hour. >> reporter: fire officials say the man was a new one learning to surf. >> not a good day for a beginner. you get dragged around. you get caught in currents.

>> reporter: again, fire officials say that man is all right tonight. during the weekend they had five water rescues, just here at ocean beach alone and today the six they say really shows how important it is to have a partner in case you get in trouble. reporting live from ocean beach, janna. to developing news out of the oakland where we learned there is an officer-involved shooting that happened around 6:30 tonight. details are slim but fire officials have confirmed police were involved in the shooting and a witness at the scene tells us, he saw an officer being taken into an ambulance. we have news crews on the way and will bring you more as it comes into the newsroom. lawmakers gathered to to pay respects to a fallen officer. funeral services were held for

crash. the truck crashed into the guard rail around 2:00 this afternoon. the highway patrol says 30 gallons of diesel fuel and dirt from the trailer spilled onto the road. several lanes had to be closed while crews cleaned up. nobody was hurt. the tracks are cleared and training running again through colfax after a freight train derailed. five cars of the train derailed yesterday and were removed this morning. the derailment briefly triggered a hazmat scare. the fireworkers determined it was a say lean solution and not hazardous. they don't know what caused that derailment. residents of piedmont are on edge tonight after a pair of frightening home invasion robberies. as jake reports, the intruders may have targeted a third home, as well. >> well. >> reporter: before sunrise piedmont police say they received a call about a suspicious doorbell ring. as police responded ten minutes

later, four or five armed masks robbers hit a house. the couple inside not hurt. a half hour later armed robbers struck again. >> the wife was putting out the garbage about that time and she heard a shot. >> reporter: that shot the police chief captain told us may have been a warning at the second home invasion. he explained the robbers again forced their way inside when the wife streamed, someone punched her, locked the husband downstairs, all while children slept. as the robbers left, the wife followed the men out, that's when the gunshot rang out piercing the home's window. >> this is unusual both in the type of crime and the time. >> reporter: this young man opened his door to show dogs which he says scared away from the robbers from making his home the first house to be hit this morning. >> my parents, say these people got out the car but the dog is loud and i guess scared them

off. >> reporter: across the street a neighbor said a home burglary two houses down pushed her into buying an alarm system. >> i didn't want a security system but i guess i have to have one now. this is really scary. >> reporter: piedmont is a target because of the location. >> it's very easy for the bad guys to get in and out quickly. >> reporter: last year piedmont had pour home invasions and eight robberies. >> three people inside a cellar phone store narrowly escaped gunfire during a robbery attempt and police want your help. check out this video surveillance from the store. police say the man entered the store saturday night holding a gun and demanding money. two employees and a store visitor retreated to a room with bulletproof glass as the suspect fired in their direction. anyone with information is asked to call the police. we're learning more tonight about that deadly hostage

situation in algeria. the state department confirmed three americans were among the 38 killed at a natural gas plant. five hostages are still missing. also killed were 29 militants. algeria's prime minister says the military assault to end the four-day stand off came after negotiations broke down between the al-qaeda linked militant and forces. repair work is about to begin on fenders damaged by an oil tanker. crews are set to start replacing the damaged sections tomorrow. earlier this month the tanker overseas sideswiped the fender. repairs are expected to cost $3 million and take four and a half months to complete. a big change could be in store for 280 that dead ends in san francisco. the mayor's transportation director is proposal to tear down the final stretch of the freeway from 16th street to

the ramp near at&t park. the move would create open space for a neighborhood and could speed up the arrival of high speed rail service downtown. taking down a freeway and creating surface streets with a mix of homes and shops and jobs can completely transform an area. >> as of now, the idea is just that, an idea but mayor ed lee supports it. officials say it's a long way from happening. u.s. and japanese teams are expanding the investigation into the batteries in the boeing 787. an over heated battery forced the landing of a japanese 787 last week but the reason has not been determined. investigators are looking at the maker of those batteries and tomorrow, another team plans to meet with the maker of the charger for the lithium ion batteries. in the meantime all dream liners worldwide remain grounded. a first of its kind jazz center opened its doors today

[ music ] john santos helped mark the opening of the jazz center at franklin. the 64 million-dollar facility is the nation's first free standing jazz center. >> only fitting that the place known around the world of invasion is the place that elevates jazz and the hallmark is improvisation. >> the first concert is wednesday night. it boasts a star studded line up and bill cosby will be the master and it's already sold out. the golden state warriors hosted a special afternoon matinee on this day. in the fourth quarter, stephon curry nailed four three pointers to lead the warriors to a 106- 99 win over the clippers.

back to the developing news out of oakland. an officer involved shooting. the 1700 block of seminary avenue in the east oakland area. fire officials have confirmed police were involved in the shooting. the initial report on the police skeaner was that an officer had been shot and two witnesses tell us that they saw an officer being taken onto an ambulance. a photographer on the scene sees a police car that crashed into a fence. officers are looking for the gunman in the area around seminary is closed to traffic. all right. rosemary here to talk about the weather and it's been beautiful out there but won't stay that way. >> you're right, the gorgeous weather is about to come to an

end. it has been nice. temperatures soring above average for late january. temperatures right now cooling off. 48 degrees in santa rosa, mid 50s san francisco and mid 40s wall net creek and 47 right now in livermore. we have partly cloudy skies out there, seeing a few high clouds roll in, drifts from this low pressure center, i should say trough right here that will actually bring us some rain. it's been about a week and half. we've been dry for sometime but we'll see the changes move in and it will be early as wednesday morning. let me pick it up here at this hour. you can see the high clouds over the bay area. they will be gone tomorrow morning. we'll wake up with high clouds and temperatures very similar to where we've been. so it will be another chilly start. tuesday afternoon we begin to see the clouds increase and then by wednesday morning looks like the morning drive is going to be mainly dry. but as we get into the 9:00, 10:00-hour it's moving into the north edge of the county. it wants to stay north.

you can see we're into wednesday evening and this system exiting the area. so a few sprinkles expected, perhaps traces over the south bay, the north bay will see measurable rain and it will rain for you starting in the morning and lasting into the afternoon. overnight lows tomorrow, upper 20s to low 30s for the locations, patchy frost and fog a possibility. afternoon highs slightly cooler tomorrow than what we saw today. 63 for santa rosa and 62 san francisco and 62 oakland and down into the south bay, 64 for san jose and still a nice day in santa cruz, 70 with mostly sunny skies. tomorrow will be nice. wednesday morning we wake up with a big change, cloudy, cool, wet for many. partly cloudy on thursday. we're dry on friday. the weekend looks cool and perhaps a bit unsettled. we'll track that between now and then. ken? >> thank you rosemary and thank you for trusting us. we'll see you the next time news breaks. our coverage continues with the
